The “Jason Liu Incident”: A Firsthand Account by Jason Liu — Part 4

July 31 Record

1. First, My Health Today

I went to sleep at 2:00 a.m. and woke at 5:00. I slept for three hours. At 10:00 a.m., I went to see a doctor.

The doctor had me complete an assessment, and the result indicated moderate to severe anxiety. The doctor prescribed medication to help me sleep and relieve the anxiety, and also scheduled an appointment with a psychologist for Saturday afternoon. The doctor advised me not to work for the time being, to exercise outdoors more, get more sunlight, and do more things that make me happy. He said tai chi and golf would both be suitable, and that I should return to work once the anxiety has eased somewhat. I am recording this truthfully because, from the first day, I decided that the record must be complete, including the parts that do not look good. I do not believe there is anything here to hide. When an ordinary person encounters something like this, losing sleep and feeling anxious are normal. Seeing a doctor is also normal.

2. Today’s Developments

I Received an Email from Maria, the Editor of Richmond News

She asked whether I had received any response and said she would continue following the story. I replied truthfully. As of today, not one of the Mayor or city councillors has replied to me. Not a single reply.

The only substantive response has come from the Office of the British Columbia Ombudsperson, confirming receipt of my complaint. The office of Member of Parliament Chak Au sent an automated acknowledgement confirming receipt of my letter. My freedom of information request remains pending. I have not yet received a file number, nor has the start date of the statutory response period been confirmed. I also still have not received any formal document telling me what, exactly, I am accused of, the basis for the accusation, or when and in what manner I am required to respond.

3. What I Mainly Did Today

Today, I devoted most of my energy to organizing and archiving all the materials. I am a licensed real estate professional. This means I am accountable to the regulator, and it also means I must be able at any time to produce records that are complete, truthful, and verifiable. I therefore organized everything systematically: the original article, the complete translation, correspondence, emails, public records, and the timeline. Nothing was omitted. Everything is arranged chronologically and ready to be submitted at any time. I am not doing this because I have something to hide. Quite the opposite. For the thing I did wrong – the AI-generated image – I voluntarily apologized publicly on July 25, two days before City Council’s motion. Apart from that, I have done nothing that needs to be concealed. Precisely for that reason, it is even more important that I preserve every item in full. If any institution examines the matter at any time, I can produce all the original materials.

I have another consideration, which I also want to state clearly: this matter is personal to me. I do not want it to implicate any colleague at my company or any client. They were not involved in this matter and should not be affected by it. Organizing the materials clearly and setting out the facts plainly is what I can do for them.

4. Regarding the Discussion Among Different Parties

Over the past several days, there has been intense discussion across various media outlets and WeChat groups. The overwhelming majority of people support me, and I am very grateful. A small number of Chinese friends have also been criticizing me harshly. I do not read their comments or respond. This is not because I consider myself above them. It is because my energy is limited right now, and the doctor has also advised me to limit my exposure to such things. I am preserving my strength for what needs to be done. Many friends have sent me private messages expressing concern. I cannot reply to each one or list everyone’s name here. I have seen every message and taken each one to heart. Thank you.

Regarding That Image, Let Me Say This Again

Over the past several days, many friends have told me that they saw nothing wrong with the image. I appreciate the goodwill behind those comments. But my position remains unchanged: that image was my mistake. It used elements of national flags and conveyed the impression that two communities were in opposition, which was exactly the opposite of what my article advocated. Its depiction of Councillor Heed was also factually incorrect. That was not my intention, but it was the effect, and the responsibility is mine. I deleted the image as soon as I discovered the problem and voluntarily apologized publicly on July 25. No one asked me to do so. I will not withdraw that apology. But I must also make the other half clear: I do not accept the characterization of “racial discrimination.” A person making a mistake and a person harbouring malicious intent are two different things. Both statements can be true at the same time, and both are true. I acknowledge my failure, and I also reject a label that does not accord with the facts. A mistake should be addressed according to its actual weight – no more and no less.

5. What Happens Next

I will truthfully set out the current lines of action, without speculation or prediction: First, City Council. I am awaiting the outcome of my freedom of information request and a response from any councillor. Second, the Ombudsperson. Receipt of my complaint has been confirmed. I do not know whether it will be accepted, and I do not presume any outcome. Third, the Human Rights Tribunal. If the matter has in fact been formally accepted, I should be notified in accordance with the process and given a statutory period in which to respond. As of today, I have received nothing. Fourth, compliance preparation in my capacity as a licensee. The materials have been organized and archived, and I am ready to cooperate with any inquiry at any time. Fifth, my own health. I will follow the doctor’s advice: take the medication, rest, get sunlight, practise tai chi, and refrain from working for the time being.

6. I Continue to Stand by the Same Principle

I do not judge anyone’s motives. Until I have seen the complete record, I am not in a position to draw conclusions. I insist on only one principle, and it has nothing to do with ethnicity: Before Council passes a resolution concerning an ordinary resident, that resident should be notified in advance and given an opportunity to speak. Before judging an article, one should read it. This is about process, not position. Today it is me. Tomorrow it could be any resident. I will continue recording events truthfully, writing them down step by step. Once again, thank you to friends from all walks of life for your support, understanding, and concern.
